As far as I can tell, there isn't much information on the ads that appeared in vintage magazines. I actually have the best luck using the ads and magazines themselves for clues.
For instance, I kept running across the name Burris on 1950s ads from like the ones pictured to the left. The first ad is an ad from 1955 for Bates Disciplined Fabric. The ad shows a mouse watching a woman juggle bottles, balls and pans. Underneath the one of the bottles is "Burris." The second ad is from 1947 and is a Saks Fifth Avenue ad featuring Black Satin by Angelique Perfumes. I've seen at least 10 Saks 5th Ave ads with Burris artwork.
Unfortunately, a google search for "Burris" didn't turn up anything. I even posted to a fashion forum (can I do a plug here for this site?) but I didn't hear anything back.
I gave up.
But, the mystery was solved Saturday when I went through my stack of newspaper insert magazines. I found the copy pictured above to the right. On the cover appears the now-familiar "Burris." Inside the magazine, the artist is identified: Burmah Burris.
